TENANTS

Where to buy Azure tenants for cold email, and why they are Microsoft 365 tenants

By 6 min read

An Azure tenant is a Microsoft 365 tenant by another name, and a licensed one creates mailboxes and sends cold email like any other. The licence is the part worth checking before you buy.

People search for Azure tenants, Microsoft 365 tenants and Entra tenants as if they were three products. They are one. Every Microsoft cloud service signs in against the same kind of directory, and which name you see depends only on which portal you opened it from.

So an Azure tenant sold for cold email is exactly what you need, provided it comes licensed. The name tells you nothing either way. The licence is what lets it create mailboxes.

Is an Azure tenant the same as a Microsoft 365 tenant?

Yes. A tenant is a Microsoft Entra ID directory, the service called Azure Active Directory until 2023. Azure, Microsoft 365 and Dynamics all use it. A tenant created by signing up for Azure can take a Microsoft 365 subscription, and a Microsoft 365 tenant can take an Azure subscription. It is the same directory either way.

Both arrive with the same default domain, something.onmicrosoft.com, and a Global Admin account. What differs is what has been bought into the tenant, and that is what decides whether anyone in it has a mailbox.

Can an Azure tenant send cold email?

Yes, when it is licensed. Mailboxes come from Exchange Online, which arrives with a licence such as Exchange Online Plan 1 or Microsoft 365 Business Basic. A licensed Azure tenant creates mailboxes and sends exactly like any Microsoft 365 tenant, because it is one. The tenants we sell all come licensed for this.

The one to avoid is a bare tenant, created with only an Azure subscription and no licence. It has users and sign-ins but no mail service, so an app cannot even be granted permission to manage mailboxes there. The fix is not a setting. It is a licence, and once one is active the same steps work.

What the tenant hasWhat it can do
A licence with Exchange Online, as ours arriveCreates mailboxes and sends once a domain is added and authenticated
A licence waiting on its GDAP linkThe same, a couple of minutes after the link is accepted
No licence, only an Azure subscriptionNo mailboxes until a licence is added

Is an Azure tenant the same as an Azure subscription?

No, and this is the other common mix-up. The tenant is the directory. A subscription is a billing container for Azure resources such as virtual machines, and it lives inside a tenant. Buying an Azure subscription to run a mail server does not help with cold email: Azure blocks outbound SMTP on port 25 for most subscription types, so a virtual machine there cannot deliver mail directly.

For cold email you want the tenant and an Exchange licence, and no Azure subscription at all. The mail goes out through Microsoft 365, which is where the sending reputation lives.

Where can you buy Azure tenants for cold email?

From the same places that sell Microsoft 365 tenants, because they are the same thing: create them yourself and license them at retail, buy through a Cloud Solution Provider, or buy from a seller who provisions licensed tenants in bulk and hands over the admin login. We compare the three in where to buy Microsoft 365 tenants.

Whichever you pick, ask for the tenant by what it holds rather than what it is called. A licensed Microsoft 365 tenant with Global Admin is what you want, whether the listing says Azure, Entra or Microsoft 365.

What to check before you buy a tenant

  1. You receive the Global Admin login, and you can change its password.
  2. The licence includes Exchange Online, and you know whether a GDAP link has to be accepted to activate it.
  3. You know how old the tenant is. New tenants are refused for roughly the first two weeks; see the 5.7.708 post.
  4. You plan for one domain per tenant, so a burned domain stays a contained loss.

How many tenants do you need?

One per domain you intend to send from. At 100 mailboxes on a domain and 3 sends per mailbox per day, one tenant carries about 300 sends a day, well under the tenant-wide external recipient cap we measured at roughly 950 to 1,000 a day. The tenant sending limit post has the measurements, and how many domains per tenant explains why one is the number.

Frequently asked questions

Is an Azure tenant the same as a Microsoft 365 tenant?

Yes. Both are a Microsoft Entra ID directory, formerly Azure Active Directory. Azure and Microsoft 365 use the same tenant, and either kind of subscription can be added to it. The difference that matters for email is whether the tenant holds a licence that includes Exchange Online.

Can I send cold email from an Azure tenant?

Yes, when it is licensed with Exchange Online, such as Exchange Online Plan 1 or Microsoft 365 Business Basic. A licensed Azure tenant creates mailboxes and sends like any Microsoft 365 tenant. Only a bare tenant with no licence cannot. Sending from an Azure virtual machine is not an alternative, because Azure blocks outbound port 25 for most subscriptions.

Where can I buy Azure tenants?

Anywhere that sells Microsoft 365 tenants, since they are the same directory: create and license them yourself, buy through a Cloud Solution Provider, or buy licensed tenants in bulk from a seller who hands over the Global Admin login. We sell them at $9 each, $8.50 on 100 or more, in orders of at least 10.

Why can a new tenant not send email?

Either the licence is not active yet, usually because a GDAP relationship has not been accepted from inside the tenant, or the tenant is too new and Microsoft refuses outbound mail with 5.7.708 until it ages, which in our measurements took about two weeks.
